They were fed and got a chance to relax with free massages before making the journey up to Los Angeles for the Special Olympics World Games. I am excited and looking forward to the competition because it is a good exposure for us.
During a break at the U.S.O.’s Neil Ash Airport Center at Lindbergh Field, Walker said he’s like any other Olympic athlete – he wants to win a gold medal.
Meanwhile, 17-year-old Suva Special School student Abdul Imtiaz Sharif said he is proud to be representing Fiji at the worldwide event.
According to the chief executive of Special Olympics Ireland, Matt English, the event marks the culmination of four years of training and strenuous effort for all the competitors taking part.
“We think they’ve lost track a little bit of what this is all about”, he said. “They could fly all the way across the country to California and compete against the world’s best”.
Artists Kent Twitchell, Cryptik and David Flores created each of the murals painted on buildings near downtown L.A. and the Los Angeles Coliseum, where the opening ceremonies will take place on Saturday. The opening ceremonies boast an all-star line-up including Stevie Wonder, Avril Lavigne, First Lady Michelle Obama, Jimmy Kimmel, Eva Longoria, Greg Louganis and more.
It features 7,000 athletes from 177 countries in 26 disciplines.
