Happy Christmas to us: Beatles songs to begin streaming Christmas Eve
Despite the rapid rise of streaming services in recent years, a number of artists opt not to stream their work.
The band’s remaining members, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, have yet to comment on why they finally decided to make The Beatles’ catalog available to stream.
The discography available on Spotify’s streaming includes nearly every product from the legendary band from Liverpool- from “Please Please Me” to “Revolver” and both the volumes of “Past Masters”. The Beatles’ music will be available on the free and premium versions of services that have both.
The Beatles will become available on many streaming services at 12:01 am/00:01 local time on December 24. The band sold 450,000 albums and 20 million individual songs in their first week on the service, according to Apple.
Swift famously withdrew her entire back catalogue from Spotify in 2014, saying: “Music is art, and art is important and rare”. The Beatles catalogue consists of 13 studio albums, each of which as been remastered, and four compilation albums.
Fans of the Beatles around the world are getting a big Christmas present this year: the iconic band’s full catalog is scheduled for release on major streaming services Thursday morning. Billboard writes, “The group’s long holdout from streaming mirror their belated arrival to the world of downloads, via an exclusive contract with Apple’s iTunes in 2010”.
There were many artists prior to the Beatles who refused to believe that putting their catalog on streaming services is not a good idea but eventually changed their mind. Yes, just in time for your Christmas Eve party.
The announcement telling fans about the ability to stream Beatles music came via a special video reflecting on the group’s career and is entitled, “The Beatles Now Streaming”.
