GOP race gets smaller with departure of Sen. Graham
South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham on Monday suspended his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination.
Woodard said that Graham’s “genteel nature” was not well-suited for a GOP presidential race that has been punctuated by “inflammatory rhetoric”. Now, Graham’s few supporters will have to find a new candidate. These include Eddie Floyd, Anita Zucker and Bob Royall, the official said.
“You can care about retail politics and you can execute retail politics, but it doesn’t change who you are and how people perceive your candidacy”, said Dennehy, who called Graham “an awesome person”.
At the Republican Jewish Coalition forum in Washington earlier this month, the South Carolinian delivered a rhetorical broadside imploring donors and voters not to back candidates who repel moderate and independent voters. Marco Rubio, another 2016 GOP presidential candidate, pushed an immigration overhaul through the upper chamber to the delight of immigration right activists. “As he leaves the race I hope our party and country listen to his counsel”.
Gov. Chris Christie, campaigning in New Hampshire, wished Graham well. “I just don’t see a way for me to get on the main [debate] stage in time to make a difference”.
Graham had in recent weeks been Trump’s antagonizer in chief, criticizing the mogul and Texas Sen. “I think we’ve done well in the debates, it’s just hard to break through because the buzz doesn’t last very long”. We thank you in advance.
Graham also would not disclose who he would endorse in the race, saying he plans to take some time with his family, but he’ll be looking to whomever he believes will be the best fit to win the presidency.
Former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore noted Graham’s departure gives his pitch a boost. John McCain, the Republican from Arizona who lost the 2008 presidential election to Barack Obama. Even so, as the candidate with the most national security experience, and, in my opinion, the most practical and honorable views of American world leadership, Lindsey stood up to and helped stem the rise within our party of isolationism and obliviousness in world affairs, and indifference to human suffering.
McCain understands Graham’s reasoning for the suspension of the campaign and is proud of him.
