FSU QB Golson won’t play in the Peach Bowl
A source told ESPN.com that Golson is dealing with a death in the family. In his place, junior Sean Maguire will likely start.
Golson was previously the starting QB for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, where he got his degree before transferring to Florida State this year. He completed 147-of-219 passes for 1,778 yards and an 11/3 TD/INT rate in 2015.
With Maguire once again at the helm, will FSU be able to keep up with a high-powered Houston offense that’s averaged 40.6 points per game? He was sacked 18 times and fumbled three times, losing one of them. He’s thrown for 1,128 yards, nine touchdowns, and two interceptions.
Golson was the quarterback when Notre Dame went to the BCS Championship Game vs. Alabama after the 2012 season.
Golson then sat out the next season as he was dismissed from school for academic reasons.
Golson’s time at Florida State also will be known for being muzzled by Fisher throughout the season. He returned in 2014 to lead Notre Dame to a 6-0 start and No. 5 ranking before going just 1-5 in the season’s second half, a period that was largely undone by turnovers.
Jimbo Fisher announced on Saturday that Golson did not travel with the team to the Peach Bowl and his collegiate career is over. Golson had three turnovers against NC State (a game Florida State came back and won with the help of Maguire’s two scores) and officially lost the starting job the following week.
Golson will finish his career with 7,628 passing yards, 42 passing touchdowns, 548 rushing yards, and 14 rushing touchdowns.
