Tremors felt in Delhi, parts of North India as earthquake hits Afghanistan
There are no reports if the natural disaster caused any damages or casualties as the tremors were also felt in neighboring Pakistan and parts of India.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS) the epicenter of the quake was 40km WSW of Askasham district of northeastern Badakhshan province of Afghanistan.
A moderate intensity quake, measuring 6.5 on the Richter Scale rocked Kashmir, including Srinagar in the wee hours today, forcing people to rush out of their homes in panic in biting cold conditions.
People were jolted out of sleep after tremors were felt in Srinagar.
Ghulam Rasool, Director General of Pakistan, said that the quake’s focal depth was 197 km in the Hindukush mountain ranges along Afghanistan-Tajikistan border.
“I thought some massive explosion had occurred outside our house”, a Jammu resident told IANS. As many as 40,000 people had died in the region in the year 2005 in a massive natural disaster. No loss of life, however, was reported from Kashmir.
Another global seismic network, GEOFON, reported on its website that the tremor was slightly stronger as a magnitude 6.3.
