Miss Universe host may have been mislead by poorly designed cue card
Miss Universe 2014 Paulina Vegas (center) hugs victor Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach as Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez (left) stands by during the 2015 Miss Universe Pageant in Las Vegas, Nevada, December 20, 2015.
Wurtzbach is the third Filipina to be crowned Miss Universe, ending a 42-year drought for the country.
During the pageant on Sunday evening, host Steve Harvey announced that Colombia’s Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo won.
Colombian media and social networks lit up with reactions to the botched Miss Universe 2015 finale on Sunday night, which saw the national contestant crowned and dethroned in a matter of minutes.
Video footage shows Wurtzbach looking confused and stunned as she returns to the front of the stage next to Miss Colombia, and Harvey goes off script to explain that he read his cue card wrong. The actual victor was Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach. “This was a terribly honest human mistake and I am so regretful”. “Thank you all, thank you for voting for me”. “For me (she was robbed) as the real victor”.
“Honestly Miss Universe had to be a publicity stunt”.
Harvey: “Ok folks, I have to apologise, the first runner-up is Miss Colombia”.
“Everything happens for a reason, so I’m happy for all of what I’ve did”, she said.
That made it two straight Miss Universe winners for Colombia, where the pageants are taken seriously.
Donald Trump, who used to own the Miss Universe competition, couldn’t help gloating on Twitter, saying “this would never have happened” under his ownership. “We are very proud!” he wrote.
When asked why the ladies rushed to Ariadna after the announcement instead of to Pia to congratulate her, Germany replied, “Because none of us voted for Philippines”.
#Secondly, I’d like to apologize to the viewers at that I disappointed as well.
