Thief steals Salvation Army kettle full of cash on Christmas Eve
The Salvation Army tells FOX 32 News Christmas Day is one of their busiest days of the year. There’s a man who moved into the shelter while he went through a divorce, another who writes poetry, and another who has struggled with addiction and keeping steady work as a janitor.
“All of us, seem like to me we’re all a family”, Roberts said.
Almost 200 other people packed into the Salvation Army’s Harbor House, where dozens of volunteers served up an old fashioned Christmas dinner.
“When I’m serving, I share my story with the people that are here”, said Tillett.
It may sound hard to believe, but the Salvation Army actually blames the not-so-bad weather we’ve seen this season. “Because then we maybe invading someone else’s privacy because someone thinks they have a right to know”, she said.
“There’s help”, said Guerrero, noting he’s interested in volunteering in the future. “Money can’t buy what we feel now”. “Yes everything is great, these are really good people here”, Hutto said.
Earlier this week the Salvation Army distributed toys as part of its annual Angel Tree program. “They take into consideration your situation”, she said of the Salvation Army.
She said she came up with the idea with her late business partner, Donna Mustoe, who died from ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) three years ago. The funds they raise now help them throughout the rest of the year.
They served 1,000 meals at the Tucson Convention Center, but they have had a lot of help throughout the years.
U.S. Representative Martha McSally donated her time and gave back to the community.
