NEW YORK (AP) Grocery store operator A&P is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy with plans to sell off stores as it faces increasingly tough competition.

All of those markets face increasing future competition from growing grocery and food chains including Wegmans.
“We are pleased that the Court has granted these motions promptly, which allows us to continue operating in ordinary course during this process – continuing to pay employees, work with suppliers and serve customers”, said Paul Hertz, president and CEO of Montvale, N.J.-based A&P, in a statement.
The 156-year-old company filed documents for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection late Sunday night with the United States bankruptcy court for the Southern District of New York, NorthJersey.com reported.
A&P has 300 supermarkets, beer, wine and liquor stores, 28,500 employees and a storied history that includes the nation’s first supermarket – a 28,125-square-foot store in Braddock, Pa. that opened in 1936.
