Chicago police officer responding to call fatally shoots 2
It happened at about 4:30 a.m.in the 4710 block of West Erie Street.
A police statement said only that officers encountered a “combative subject”.
The Cook County medical examiner has identified two people killed in a Chicago police shooting as a 19-year-old black man and 55-year-old black woman.
The Chicago Police Department is the subject of a federal civil rights investigation, which came after the release of a video showing a white officer shooting Laquan McDonald, a black teenager, 16 times in 2014.
Chicago’s Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the shooting, but said it was too early to comment, the Associated Press reports. He said he heard gunshots as he made his way down from the second floor and then saw his son and Jones lying in the foyer. “That’s a bit much”, said Janet Cooksey, LeGrier’s mother, who was not at the home at the time of the shooting.
A person was seriously wounded Saturday afternoon in a police-involved shooting on the Far South Side in the city’s Washington Heights neighborhood. At this point, it is unclear exactly how Jones was shot, she was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital.
They say LeGrier hadn’t been acting like himself since September, and his behavior this morning prompted the call to the police.
The police dispatcher told officers that a “male caller said someone is threatening his life”.
In a statement on Facebook, Charlene Carruthers, National Director of the Black Youth Project, said that she is “livid, sad and devastated” by the news.
According to Chicago police officials, the autopsy still needs to be completed before determining how many times Quintonio LeGrier was shot.
Amid the recent upheaval in the city, Mayor Rahm Emanuel fired Chicago’s police superintendent and has pledged to reform the department, but protesters have not stopped their calls for the mayor’s resignation.
Quintonio Legrier and his neighbor Bettie Jones were both pronounced dead after being rushed to two separate hospitals. “The 19-year-old son is banging on his bedroom door with a baseball bat”.
Jones lived in the first-floor apartment with her boyfriend, he said.
The woman who was killed, Bettie Jones, was a downstairs neighbor and had been asked by the father to keep an eye out for police, according to both families. “I went to the hospital and my son had seven bullet holes in him”, Cookery said. Her children range in age from 19 to 38 and include 19-year-old twins.
Melvin Jones, Jones’ older brother, said his sister was a hard-working single mother who had recently started a new job. Right now there’s a whole lot of anger, a whole lot of tears.
The police said the matter remains under investigation. “I thought that we were supposed to get service and protection”.
