‘Force Awakens’ becomes fastest movie to $1 billion

Where Star Wars: The Force Awakens was expected to perform reasonably better in multiplexes, it was going to be hard for the film to replicate its success in single-screen cinemas.

Star Wars scenario noteworthy for its high quality, continues to break records.

Walt Disney Co yesterday released a statement saying the movie had generated box office receipts of $US890.3 million globally between December 25. That is one day earlier than the previous record holder – Universal’s “Jurassic World”, which was released earlier this year. When added to last weekend’s record haul as well as the worldwide box office, the film’s total revenue is approximately $1.1 billion, Variety reports.

Since the story, like almost every other Star Wars stories that wasn’t from the original six films, is no longer cnosider canon, according to Disney, J.J. Abrams and company would have been fine using Shadow of the Empire as the title. The new Star Wars has already topped Jurassic World for largest opening weekend this month and looked certain to clear $1bn by the end of Sunday, according to Rentrak, an industry researcher, when studios will provide Saturday and Sunday sales figures.

“It’s bigger than big”, Iger said in an interview with Bloomberg TV on December 21.

The “force” is obviously with the seventh installment of the Star Wars film franchise as it is set to become the fastest film to reach the $1 billion mark in global ticket sales within the next few days. But I’m glad that they made a decision to go with The Force Awakens instead.

Disney, which acquired “Star Wars” creator Lucasfilm for $4 billion in 2012, plans to make as many as five more movies in the series.
