Balmy temperatures to remain through Christmas weekend
Temperatures normally climb into the mid-40s during the day, according to the weather service.
After a quick burst of cool air last weekend, the mercury continued on its way up again over much of the East.
That was midnight. It continues to get warmer with highs to reach 74 degrees.
And Christmas Day has already seen a prominent record shattered as well, helping to end 2015 – which will be the hottest year on record – with a bang.
On Christmas Day itself we can expect sunny skies and temps in the low 60s. In downtown L.A., daytime highs over the Christmas holiday are expected to reach between 62 and 64 degrees, Seto said.
It wasn’t just NY.
In fact, southeast MI could set a record high on Wednesday with a forecasted high of 60 degrees, which could beat the previous record of 56 set in 1893.
Rupert Warwick, of Cornwall in the United Kingdom, said the temperatures were similar to what he was used to in December in the southwest of England.
The record warmth is attributable to a flow of air sourced straight from the tropics. Albany’s 58-degree temperature Thursday morning broke the record of 57, set in 1941. Nearly all of Florida is in the 80s, and the 70-degree line is reaching as far north as Washington.
Based on Detroit records, the “whitest” Christmas was in 1951 with 13 inches of snow recorded, with 6.2 inches of the snow falling on Christmas day, Deedler wrote. This year, they averaged over 50 degrees. The iPhone forecast, powered by the Weather Channel, doesn’t show temperatures cooling down until Monday, when the high will still be at least 10 degrees above freezing.
The record-breaking trend covered all along the East Coast. Portions of Interstate 5, the main highway on the West Coast, were to become blanketed with snow and ice Thursday night into Friday morning, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The delightful spring weather may be making it “not feel like Christmas”, but the alternative in other parts of the country is frightful. Even average or slightly above-average levels of rain and snow, though, have been helpful as the state tries to beat back a fifth year of drought. Otherwise, there won’t be any big weather hazards, just unseasonably warm weather.
