Family of 55-year-old woman to hold vigil
Though no one witnessed the shooting, multiple family members said they think police shot through the door, striking Bettie Jones three times. Police should use stun guns or other nonlethal methods instead, Walker said at a news conference outside the West Side residence where the victims lived.
Chicago Police Department said in a statement that “upon arrival, officers were confronted by a combative subject resulting in the discharging of the officer’s weapon, fatally wounding two individuals”.
A vigil will be held Sunday afternoon for a 55-year-old woman who was accidentally shot by Chicago police.
Both Jones and LeGrier were black.
“His father was scared because that’s not his character”, LeGrier’s mother Janet Cooksey, who was not present, told the Tribune.
The Chicago Police Department is also the subject of a federal civil rights investigation.
At the same time the police confirmed that Betty Jones was killed by accident, they also announced a major policy shift: All officers involved in shootings will be placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days. Both died at nearby hospitals shortly after the incident, police said. A city on the brink of upheaval with protests still taking place more than a month after the release of a dash cam video showing another police officer shooting another teenager in another case of untreated mental illness. Quintonio was said to have attempted to break down his father’s bedroom door earlier in the evening, prompting the call to police.
IPRA spokesman Larry Merritt said it was “very early on in the investigation” and that he could not release further details. She said he graduated from Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy in Chicago and “was going somewhere”.
According to the Chicago Tribune, this is the first incident of lethal force by Chicago police following the public release of footage of Laquan McDonald’s shooting death. The graphic nature of the video, in which Van Dyke is shown shooting McDonald not long after arriving on the scene, didn’t help. On Saturday night, the department extended “its deepest condolences to the victim’s family and friends”.
Rev. Marshall Hatch said the family is “absolutely devastated”.
Antonio LeGrier said when he returned to his second-floor flat early Saturday, his son appeared to be a “little agitated”. “My son has seven bullet holes in him”.
Mr Legrier’s mother said her son had been dealing with mental health issues. He said Jones told him she saw his son outside with a baseball bat. LeGrier was threatening his father with a metal bat when police were called. When he got a floor lower he saw his son and the neighbor on the ground. Cooksey said. “I mean, who’s gonna answer these questions?” LeGrier was also fatally shot. Bettie Jones, 55, was apparently shot when she tried to answer the front door for the officers-she was the first-floor tenant of a building that shares a front entrance.
Antonio LeGrier told the Sun-Times that his son had emotional problems after spending most of his childhood in foster care. The Associated Press reported Legrier was studying engineering at Northern Illinois University.
“All evidence will be shared with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office for additional review in the days ahead”.
On Christmas Eve, protesters from Black Lives Matter blockaded the city’s main shopping streets as part of a campaign calling for the mayor, Rahm Emanuel, to resign.
Her brother, Melvin Jones, said more than a dozen family members had celebrated Christmas with Ms Jones on Friday. He said she lived there with her boyfriend.
