Garcetti Aims To Raising The Wage In The County
LOS ANGELES The governing body of Los Angeles County on Tuesday passed a measure to raise the mandatory minimum wage incrementally to $15 an hour by 2020 in unincorporated areas that are home to about a tenth of the county’s population.
Cuomo already appointed a wage board that earlier this year granted an increase to tipped workers who wait tables at restaurants, tend bar, and hold other jobs where some of their income is dependent on tips.
Vice President Joe Biden was scheduled to promote a higher minimum wage during a stop Wednesday at a washroom equipment manufacturer in Los Angeles, which last month enacted a progressive minimum wage increase to $15 per hour.
Under the proposal, the minimum wage would be raised to $12 beginning January 2018, . To avoid similar waste, Sacramento can draw from Beacon’s analysis and include mitigations such as a slower implementation period for nonprofits and small businesses, and a teen wage to preserve access to entry-level positions for unskilled workers. “They are now in the poverty class”, Supervisor Sheila Kuehl said.
“I think that this is a historic day for the county, and I’m proud to be a part of this movement”, agreed Supervisor Hilda Solis.
Bloomberg reported that Bryon Brown, the panels chairman and mayor of Buffalo, N.Y., told a June meeting in Albany: “The three members on the board are in agreement that there should be a substantial increase”. Carmelo Calascibetta worries a minimum wage increase could jeopardize his business. Supervisor Mike Antonovich voted “no”. Grassroots activity was complemented by a vigorous social media presence, overwhelmingly positive polling, support from more than 180 businesses statewide, several high profile events with state and federal elected officials that generated positive media coverage, radio ads, and a steady drumbeat of support in the media for a higher wage. She said the use of an appointed board to essentially restructure the wages in an entire industry is undemocratic, and was not the original purpose of the wage boards.
While the board’s vote does not apply to incorporated cities like Santa Clarita, a few said it could present problems for them. He also said he wanted information about the effects of a wage increase on businesses that will be operating across the street from others without the same salary requirements. “Because we need to raise the minimum wage”. Employers will cut back…
Cuomo said in a news conference Sunday that the majority of minimum wage workers were in the fast food industry, but that he hopes to extend the wage increases across the board. Now, adults are working those jobs, they can’t pay for college with the wages and they have very little opportunity to move up in the work force.
The Sacramento City Council is slated to review the local minimum wage soon, providing us a unique opportunity to learn from the mistakes of other cities in crafting our own policy.
