‘Star Wars’ reaches $1B worldwide, smashing records
The film so far has earned $544.5 million in the US, already fifth-best ever. The last two weekends are now the highest grossing weekends ever for the overall box office.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens has earned $1B in just 12 days.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens is now showing in theaters. Disney said “Star Wars” has rung up $440.4 million in U.S. and Canada ticket sales and $449.9 million internationally, and it is set to open in China, the world’s No. 2 movie market, on January 9.
Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight” did very well in limited release, with the 70mm roadshow hauling in $4.5 million from 100 screens, for a very strong $45,366 per screen average. It again takes that crown from the previous king, Jurassic World (Jurassic World does appear to still have the biggest opening weekend in the foreign market though).
The Force Awakens has a shot at $150 million and a record-setting second weekend that would easily eclipse the $106.6 million pulled in by Jurassic World in its second weekend in June, Dergarabedian says.
With the skyrocketing success of the latest “Star Wars”, new reports now claimed that Disney is now in the works of planning for the next installment of the “Star Wars” trilogy, which is called “Star Wars: Episode VIII” directed by Rian Johnson.
