Niners promote rugby star Jarryd Hayne from practice squad
Things could change in the next game for the Running Back though as he was today reinstated to the 53-man active squad after a raft of injuries from the current players.
He finished with nine carries for 27 yards and also chalked up 20 yards from five receptions.
Wide receiver Jerome Simpson won’t suit up for the 10th game this season; he was suspended the first six games, he sat out Week 7 as a roster exemption and now is inactive for the third time in six games.
The 49ers’ running back situation now consists of Kendall Gaskins, recently acquired DuJuan Harris and now Hayne.
But with two games left, Hayne was brought back up to the active roster to show his development. There is a chance Hayne might not take to the field against the Detroit Lions this weekend.
The 49ers have placed guard Alex Boone on injured reserve with a knee injury to make room for Hayne, and Boone could have played his last game for the franchise as he is a free agent at the end of the season. Monday morning’s game will no doubt give him confidence knowing he can still compete at the top level.
Hayne was earning about $A9100 a week on the practice squad. The Hayne Plane was cut on October 31 but signed with the teams’ practice squad after clearing waivers.
Hayne, after spending nearly two months on the 49ers’ practice squad, was one of the shining lights on his error-riddled team after the being elevated to starting running back.
Hayne primarily worked on special teams during his stint on the active roster earlier this season. The 49ers lost Carlos Hyde (foot), Reggie Bush (knee) and Mike Davis (hand) to injuries this season – Davis could return from IR Boomerang in Week 17.
The coach did have some criticism for Hayne, pointing out how the Australian fell short of the first down marker on a key play late in the game.
