Messi crowned world’s best player over Ronaldo at Globe Soccer Awards
Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi triumphed at the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai after scooping the Best Player of the Year accolade.
Few will disagree with Messi winning the main award of the night, though.
The Barcelona forward and Argentine captain is a four-times world player of the year and has been shortlisted for the 2015 Ballon d’Or in January.
Barca themselves were named Club of the Year while Josep Maria Bartomeu was President of the Year. “Even though the importance is in the team as a whole, this is also handsome to receive an individual prize, and so I am happy, appreciative, and content to be here”, said Messi after receiving his award.
“Messi is one of three players to have made a major impact at Barcelona recently”, Bartomeu said at the 10th edition of the Dubai International Sports Conference. “They are playing better and better and we hope things go on like that”.
New York City pair Andrea Pirlo and Frank Lampard were recognised and given Player Career Awards. Agent Jorge Mendes was honoured as best agent and Saudi Arabia’s Yasser Al Shahrani was named the GCC player of the year. History beckons for Barcelona next year, too, as they look to become the first team to retain the Champions League title in its current format.
