Raiders win possible Oakland finale
The Raiders wound up kicking a field goal, then held on for a 23-20 win in what might have been the last-ever game in Oakland.
San Diego regained the lead at 14-7 early in the second quarter on a 7-yard pass from Rivers to Dontrelle Inman.
On third-and-8 from the San Diego 43, Carr completed a 33-yard pass to wide receiver Seth Roberts, giving Oakland a first down at the 10 and setting up Janikowski’s chip shot. Woodson had two tackles and took one snap on offense in overtime, losing 3 yards on a run-pass option off of a reverse. To be able to send him out the right way, to be able to cap off a special evening like this, our last home game of the year…
“I wanted to be with my family, but this could be it”, she said. “After that moment hit me, I asked [my kids], I said “hey, man, you guys mind if daddy doesn’t play football again next year?’ and they were both like, ‘daddy, that’s fine, don’t play” and that’s it. That was my confirmation”. “That’s the way it goes sometimes”. The Chargers linebackers ransacked the Raiders pass protection. However, San Diego won only one of those four games because it scored just three points twice and more than 20 once. Latavius Murray capped the nine-play, 77-yard possession with a 22-yard touchdown run.
Even with that, head coach Jack Del Rio knew it was important to win the game for his veteran. He’s a great Raiders. The Chargers lost the game after failing to convert on a fourth down. But it had been a while – specifically, 15 years since Woodson had recorded a reception in a game. “Doesn’t make it any easier losing another one like that”.
Wonder how many dry eyes were in the house on this night?
Carr hit Crabtree on the next play for the go-ahead touchdown with 4:42 to go. Oakland went for two and converted after that, pushing the score to 20-17 with 4:41 remaining in the fourth quarter. Woodson got a loud ovation as he was introduced last with the defensive starters and was the only Oakland captain for the pregame coin toss.
Inside the Coliseum, fans appeared focused on the game and not the team’s future. Raiders owner Mark Davis and Chargers owner Dean Spanos are seeking to partner on building a stadium in Carson. The NFL plans to make its final decision during the owners meetings in January. Others handed out thousands of “Stay in Oakland” signs to fans entering the stadium.
What Happened: This was quite possibly the Raiders’ final game in Oakland (there have been plenty of rumors about moving to the L.A. area in the off-season). “I was nearly in the end zone”.
San Diego’s Kendall Reyes got his hands up to bat down a pass at the line and then corralled the ball out of the air. But on the play, the Raiders’ Khalil Mack was called for defensive holding, and San Diego coach Mike McCoy took points off the board to accept the penalty and take the automatic first down at the 30. But the catch was wiped out on replay review and Lambo eventually missed a 48-yard field goal, keeping the Chargers lead at 17-12. Raiders WR Amari Cooper was limited by a sore foot on the short week. “But C-Wood, he’s a great player”.
