Trump ties with Pope on ‘admired’ list
“Trump’s surprisingly strong and often controversial presidential campaign has made him a prominent news figure this year and, thus, top-of-mind for many Americans”, Gallup reported. Trump has finished in the top 10 before, from 1988 through 1990 and again in 2011. She has been picked as the most admired woman 20 times, compared to Eleanor Roosevelt (13 times), Margaret Thatcher (six times) and Jacqueline Kennedy (five times). They trail former President Dwight Eisenhower, who was named 12 times.
“Although Clinton and Obama each led this year’s poll by significant margins, the percentage mentioning each as most admired is slightly lower than the percentages they have received in the past”, Gallup said in its report.
President Obama won the poll with 17 percent – his 20th time on top of the survey – followed by The Donald and the Pope, who both collected 5 percent.
Donald Trump tied Pope Francis in the year the pontiff visited this country for the first time.
Hillary Clinton was the most admired woman, with 13 percent.
Former Secretary of State Clinton has been America’s most admired woman for 14 consecutive years of this annual Gallup survey. Meanwhile, Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders earned 3 percent, with Bill Gates at 2 percent.
And Americans put Carly Fiorina in a tie with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and long-admired Queen Elizabeth at 2 percent. “In addition to the eight years he served as president from 1953 to 1961, the World War II hero was also named most admired the year he was first elected president (1952), and three other years when the incumbent president was generally unpopular (1950, 1967 and 1968)”.
Mr. Obama, who has been named eight times, is now in a tie for second all-time with former Presidents Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan.
Neither of the Clintons, however, can match Billy Graham’s 59 times in the Top Ten for most-admired.
