Redskins win with chip on shoulders
PHILADELPHIA, PA – DECEMBER 26: Fletcher Cox #91 of the Philadelphia Eagles reacts after sacking quarterback Kirk Cousins #8 of the Washington Redskins in the second quarter of a football game at Lincoln Financial Field on December 26, 2015 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
DeMarco Murray was the team’s leading rusher with 27 yards and touchdown, but he also had a lowlight fumble that was returned by DeAngelo Hall for a Redskins touchdown. “But I’m going to continue to work as hard as I can and show up early in the morning and stay late at night and continue to work”. Maybe no one guessed it, but having played at an elite level all year, Cousins is a contract-year quarterback that is going to get paid well this offseason.
The Eagles’ 38-24 loss to the Washington Redskins was reflective of yet Kelly’s front office moves over the last couple of years have blown up in his face. “It’s unacceptable. We have got to find a way to do a better job, and we have to put these guys in a better position to make plays”.
After consecutive 10-win seasons in Kelly’s first two years, the Eagles had lofty aspirations.
The moment was months in the making, an extension of the team becoming even tighter following their comeback victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in October headlined by Cousins’ “You like that” outburst. Just last week, Murray was non-existent with only two carries for 3 yards. Kelly took control of personnel decisions past year and overhauled a team that went 10-6 in each of his first two seasons. The second half saw much of the same.
Cousins later threw his fourth touchdown pass, this time to wide receiver Pierre Garcon from 13 yards.
“I’d like to be back here”, Bradford said after Saturday’s loss. It would’ve been a 60-yard TD.
“So you’re telling me you have Bradford, who you claim you want here long term and who says he wants to be here, and you haven’t discussed any negotiations with him?” an incensed Johnson asked rhetorically. His 365 passing yards marked the third straight game he has thrown for 300 or more, and he led all players in standard-scoring leagues this week with 32. He went 37 of 56 for 380 yards for one touchdown Saturday, and that included key drops from some of his receivers.
While Jackson’s numbers didn’t necessarily stand out on Saturday – he had four catches for 40 yards – his presence allowed for other Redskins to have big nights. Momentum shifted the Eagles way when the Redskins three-out on the next possession and then all signs pointed to disaster. During the 4th quarter, when it was clear the game was out of reach, former Eagles WR Desean Jackson began trolling Eagles fans on the sidelines.
