Jarryd Hayne impresses in National Football League return for San Francisco 49ers

A new era in Detroit could start as early as next season. It’s too late for it to matter, and that part is frustrating for Matthew Stafford and company.

Despite a strong first half by the 49ers, the team returned to their error-prone ways and tepid offence in the second half, in which they went scoreless. San Francisco never had the lead again, gaining just 72 yards in the second half.

The Aussie told the Sacramento Bee of his development to date, “I think anyone who’s seen my growth will tell you how much I’ve changed and developed”.

49ers quarterback Blaine Gabbert, however, was full of praise for Hayne’s performance.

Joique Bell’s 1-yard run gave Detroit a 17-14 lead one play after Gabbert lost the ball on a sack.

Stafford was 29 of 37 for 302 yards.

The Lions will have to devote $24 million of their salary cap next season to retain Johnson unless they restructure his contract.

Veteran wideout Anquan Boldin crested 1,000 career receptions on his first catch of the game and is now one of only 13 National Football League players to have ever accomplished that mark in history.

“At this point, it doesn’t mean much”, said Boldin, who had five catches for 27 yards.

Due to the horror injury toll at San Francisco, coach Jim Tomsula opted to promote Hayne as the side’s predominant running back option against the Lions on Monday morning (AEDT).

Harris helped San Francisco to a relatively successful first half before fading into the background.

Offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter said this week that he had to be more creative in finding ways to get the ball into Johnson’s hands. It has mostly been a season to forget for both of these teams, but with jobs on the line for many this upcoming offseason there is still plenty to play for among both rosters.
