Chipotle alters cooking methods following E.coli outbreak
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that it has started investigating the new outbreak linked to the company.
“In this case, when someone is really trying to regain the trust and refocus the brand around food safety, it’s even more important that they be open and transparent”, said Benjamin Chapman, a food safety extension specialist at North Carolina State University.
Chipotle officials also chose to revert to their pre-2014 model of using of centralized kitchens to do the washing, chopping and other preparation of fresh cilantro, tomatoes and lettuce.
Chipotle says it is working on ways to better monitor the safety of the food ingredients it uses, including using methods such as high-resolution testing and additional food-safety training for employees.
“Even rational and informed consumers could potentially be given reason to pause when choosing Chipotle”, JPMorgan analyst John Ivankoe wrote in a research note on Tuesday.
The number of ill people reported from each state is as follows: California (3), IL (1), Maryland (1), Minnesota (2), NY (1), OH (3), OR (13), Pennsylvania (2), and Washington (27).
What do you think should Chipotle do to end this E. coli outbreak? There are reports that if Wall Street analysts continue to give negative remarks, the company’s share price will continue to decline.
Following the E. coli outbreak, Chipotle has increased its food safety measures.
“The fact that anyone has become ill eating at Chipotle is completely unacceptable to me and I am deeply sorry”, founder Steve Ells said. The cause of the E. coli contagion still hasn’t been found.
“While it is never possible to completely eliminate all risk, this program eliminates or mitigates risk to a level near zero, and will establish Chipotle as the industry leader in this area”, said Mansour Samadpour, CEO of IEH Laboratories and Consulting Group, in a statement. Another 62 per cent had not changed their habits and 3 per cent were more likely to eat at Chipotle, according to the survey of 829 adults on December 17-21, which has a credibility interval of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
Outbreak No. 2: CDC is investigating another, more recent outbreak of a different, rare DNA fingerprint of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O26 linked to Chipotle Mexican Grill. The company warned in an SEC filing earlier this month that business had been “extremely volatile” and it foresaw sales falling 8% to 11% in the fourth quarter. “I’m sorry for the people who got sick”.
