Giants notes: Fallout from Beckham incident
The discussions and scalding hot takes will likely rage on through Sunday as the NFL upheld Beckham’s one-game suspension that will keep him out of the Giants’ game this weekend versus the Minnesota Vikings – during fantasy football championship week.
“I thought it was contrite, apologetic”, Coughlin said.
Beckham certainly deserved the suspension for running backwards over 20 yards to deliver an egregiously uncalled-for helmet-to-helmet hit on the Panthers’ Josh Norman, as guilty as Carolina may have been in provoking him. Josh Norman should not be totally absolved either, but he did not try to physically assault OBJ (at least not outside the rules of the game).
Beckham’s helmet-to-helmet hit on Norman came after a play with just over three minutes remaining in the third quarter.
The competitive banter between Beckham and Norman escalated to the point of multiple physical confrontations.
Former NFL receiver James Thrash heard the appeal in his first year of a role to decide such matters under agreement from the league and its players union.
ALAMEDA, Calif. – The rookie season of defensive lineman Mario Edwards Jr.is over. The last time a team lost the Super Bowl one year and won it the next was in 1972 when the flawless Dolphins did it.
“I owe some people an apology”, Beckham said in his statement.
Wing said he had never before seen an opposing player cross over into his team’s end of the field and said Ball was targeting Beckham with a “legitimate threat”. The youngster made sure to offer the star player some encouragement as well.
“I wasn’t raised to act like I did the other day”.
“I’ll be the reason this will be your last game”, Wing recalled the man saying.
New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin talks to his team during NFL football practice, Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2015, in East Rutherford, N.J. “It’s not fair, it’s not justice, it’s not the way it was”. “If you’re naive enough to think that way, then you better do some soul searching yourself”.
“A scheme’s a scheme, but to say that it’s going to produce, we haven’t had the numbers”, Williams said Wednesday. “But there were factors involved, starting in pregame, which are well-documented, which indicates there was an attempt to provoke him”, Coughlin told reporters. Norman should have been given a second penalty when he ran into Odell in the second play on the clip; in that case, ODB should also have been penalized, for his reaction.
Panthers Coach Ron Rivera said Tuesday he was “a little disappointed” about the “assumptions and innuendos” about his players.
After the game, Beckham, by far the best wide receiver in the game, said he felt threatened because the Panthers walked out of the tunnel with a baseball bat.
“Our team has got to step up”, Coughlin said. And the referees who watched Beckham’s increasingly violent antics somehow didn’t believe he needed to be tossed. “This isn’t about anything that was said or done to me”.
