FAA introduces civilian drone registration deadline of February 19
Those who are caught flying after failing to register their drone by the allotted time will face severe penalties, according to the FAA.
In the executive summary of the new rules, the FAA explains “The estimate for 2015 sales indicates that 1.6 million small unmanned aircraft meant to be used as model aircraft are expected to be sold this year (including approximately 50 percent of that total during the fourth quarter of 2015)”. Users of remote-control airplanes have not been required to register their devices in the past, but Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said in a press release that a new generation of drone technology calls for new rules.
Registrants will need to provide their name, home address, and e-mail address. All drone registrations will be valid for three years, operators will get a unique registration number which has to be marked on the drone. For anyone registering in the first month, the $5 aircraft registration fee will be refunded. And you should listen up even if you’re a drone hobbyist, because the rules might apply to a drone you otherwise use for fun at the beach or in your back yard.
Registration is a statutory requirement for all aircraft. Owners may register at www.faa.gov/uas/registration.
Owners of any UAVs purchased for use after 21 December have to register before the first flight outdoors.
The FAA law also requires operators to have their registration certificate with them while operating the unmanned aircraft.
The online registration system now supports only hobby and recreation drones, the FAA said. You must be 13-years-old, and the registration will last three years for all hobby aircrafts you own.
The online program applies only to drones that weigh 55 pounds or less.
“Make no mistake: unmanned aircraft enthusiasts are aviators”, he said.
“We believe is largely due to people not understanding the rules”, said FAA Deputy Administrator Michael Whitaker.
The registration fee is $5, but is being waived until January 20, 2016 to encourage registrations.
