Chicago police won’t release details of shooting

Emanuel, under fire for a series of fatal police shootings, directed the department and the leaders of the independent Police Review Authority and the police department to meet immediately to “determine the deficiencies in the current training, and determine what steps can be taken immediately to address them”.

Two teenagers from Evanston, ages 16 and 17, and a 16-year-old from Skokie were each charged with two counts of burglary to a motor vehicle and were petitioned to juvenile court, according to a statement from the Evanston Police Department.

The deadly encounter occurred at about 4:30 a.m., not long after the elder LeGrier called cops and said his son, armed with an aluminum bat, was behaving erratically and had tried to bust through the dad’s locked bedroom door.

Nineteen-year-old Quintonio LeGrier and a neighbor, 55-year-old Bettie Jones, were killed early Saturday after LeGrier’s father called police about his son.

He said Jones told him his son was outside with a baseball bat. Loved ones say she was opening the door for police when legrier began to make his way down the stairs and she was caught in a spray of bullets fired by police.

He says his son had emotional problems, but that it didn’t warrant him getting shot and killed.

“The 55 year old female victim was accidentally struck and tragically killed”, the statement noted.

Bettie Jones’ brother, Melvin Jones, told the Tribune that his sister celebrated “an excellent” Christmas at her apartment Friday with about 15 other relatives.

“She wasn’t saying anything”, Jones said.

Quintonio LeGrier, 19, was killed early Saturday by police responding to a domestic disturbance at an apartment on the city’s West Side, along with downstairs neighbor Bettie Jones, 55.

They said 19-year-old Quintonio LeGrier was “combative” toward officers before he was shot.

“Right now is a time for compassion towards the suffering of families that are experiencing injustices throughout our city”, Jahmal Cole, a Jones relative, said Sunday at a press conference. Right now there’s a whole lot of anger, a whole lot of tears.

“An innocent lady got shot as well because the police were trigger happy”, LeGrier’s mother, Janet Cooksey, told WLS. Both LeGrier and Jones are black.

Cooksey said she wants a personal apology from Emanuel for what happened to LeGrier, her only child.

Both LeGrier and Jones were black, the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. Shortly after 4 a.m. LeGrier started to get violent.

Activists threatened to march on the Mayors office.

On Sunday police were responding to a domestic call.

That case contributed to Garry McCarthy losing his job as Chicago’s police superintendent and spurred calls for Emanuel to resign. They say they were confronted by, quote, “a combative subject, resulting in the discharging of the officer’s weapon”.

IPRA also suspends its investigations when there is a criminal investigation.

The officers also found items from two other vehicle burglaries.

News reports said that Emanuel at present is on a family vacation in Cuba, but his office released a statement after this weekend’s shooting promising that the incident will be investigated.
