G Boone out, RB Hayne in for 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers promoted running back Jarryd Hayne to the active 53-man roster on Saturday after placing guard Aaron Boone on season-ending injured reserve.
The 49ers have until tomorrow morning to officially move Hayne off their practice roster to the 53-man squad. The Niners already ruled out Shaun Draughn for Sunday’s tilt with the Detroit Lions.
After some dazzling pre-season performances he had disappointed in the regular season, fumbling three times as a punt returner, including in his first attempt, before he was cut after six games. We are guessing Gaskins gets the start, but the 49ers left the door open for Harris to start, and also activated Jarryd Hayne late this week.
The Lions defeated the 49ers 32-17 in Detroit on Sunday.
It quickly paid off, with Hayne showing the power and speed that made him an NRL star, including an 11-yard run that put quarterback Blaine Gabbert in a position to connect with tight end Vance McDonald for the first touchdown of the game.
THE Hayne Plane is back in action.
Harris has nine carries for 74 yards, including a long of 25 yards.
The 49ers, as they have done regularly throughout the season, imploded with offside penalties and missed tackles, spoiling a strong first half by going scoreless in the second.
Hayne gave up a rugby career in Australia to sign with the Niners in March.
Hayne said last week that he’s made significant strides in the sport and that he’s eager to return to the National Football League next season.
“I wouldn’t say I was expecting it, but I was hoping for it”, Hayne, who would go on to play 35 of the 49ers’ 59 offensive snaps, said.
Hayne was not tapped for punt-return duty – his primary role after he made the San Francisco roster to start the season.
