Steyn out for the rest of innings
England moved into a match-winning position in the first Test against a South Africa side that endured a calamitous third day in Durban. Steyn, who has not suffered any tears or ligament damage, will have a further scan after the match has finished.
The scan was inconclusive and Moosajee said he hoped Steyn would be able to bowl on Tuesday.
South Africa’s predicament was made worse by a right shoulder injury for its frontline fast bowler Dale Steyn, which could have repercussions for the rest of the four-match series. But Broad forced an edge behind to wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow with a superb seaming-away delivery, and England edged ahead. “I think it’s the toughest part of the game”, said Elgar. “He’s got that ability”.
Moeen Ali, meanwhile, is shaping up to be a central figure for England as they press for victory over the next two days.
Broad dismissed opener Stiaan van Zyl as well as South Africa s two key batsmen – captain Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers – to finish the day with three for 16 from ten overs.
South Africa now had to “show some character and some fight”, Elgar said, to scrap for a draw.
And if that wasn’t enough, insult was added to injury for the hosts when talk of ball-tampering surfaced after the umpires changed the ball just 26.3 overs into England’s second innings.
Amla was dropped by Bairstow on two, although that mistake didn’t cost England much. With Ali having Kyle Abbott caught bat and pad, South Africa were 156 for 7 with a little more than half an hour played. He sent a low catch to Ben Stokes in the gully, who claimed the dismissal after diving forward and cupping his hands under the ball.
Dane Piedt and Morne Morkel made just a single between them as Steve Finn mopped up the tail to give Alastair Cook’s men an 89-run first-innings lead.
Hales looked secure enough, saw off the initial shine, and had started to expand his game against the spinner, sweeping him cleanly for six and to the fine leg boundary, so there was a sense of urgency there, particularly with Compton now in and intent on continuing his own game in the same manner that a predecessor Jonathan Trott might have done. Broad’s blazing bowling spell and raging batting display late into the English innings will only add to his list of brilliance performance in Test. Vishal Mehra takes a look on how England’s good fortune is dependent on Stuart Broad’s performance. He had faced 155 balls by the close, hitting five fours and a six.
Finn took the last two wickets with the new ball. But he went back on his stumps when Piedt came into the attack and was trapped leg before wicket by a ball which spun back at him. He woke up sore and during the second innings today he found the pain and discomfort become increasingly troublesome.
“We’re very similar in character when it comes to showing that kind of grit and fight out there… he was basically out there saying that he appreciates what I’ve done and he’s been there before. But tomorrow morning is a big first hour”, Broad said.
