Best Memes of the New England Patriots & Matthew Slater Electing to Kick
The officials meet New York Jets’ Darrelle Revis (24), teammate Calvin Pryor (25) and New England Patriots’ Matthew Slater (18) and teammate Rob Ninkovich (50) for the coin toss before the overtime period of an NFL football gam…
As a Jets fan, I’ve despised the Patriots coach ever since he abruptly resigned as “HC of the NYJ” in 2000 to take over in New England, where he then won four Super Bowls.
It was fun to watch the social media reactions of Patriot fans and the formidable Patriots Media Cartel in the moments after the Jets’ subsequent game-winning touchdown. Brady never touched the ball.
By DENNIS WASZAK Jr. That was the only drive on which Brady got comfortable against an aggressive defense that pressured and hit him all game. By electing to kick instead of choosing which goal to defend, Slater allowed the Jets to get the ball and choose their side of the field. “We’re on to next week”.
The Jets moved the ball into New England territory on the ensuing drive, but they stalled out and punted, and then Bill Belichick had Tom Brady kneel on the ball to run out the final 25 seconds and send the game into overtime. Chris Chase wrote about this earlier, but the Broncos (10-4) still have the No. 1 seed in play, if they win out and the Dolphins beat the Patriots.
Belichick had done it once before, in 2013, but a hefty wind was involved against Denver. “Didn’t like the way it worked out, but to me that was the right decision for our team at that time”.
After the first “exchange” of possessions, things start to go poorly for the team that kicked off at the beginning of OT.
Sunday, New York can finish the job by beating Buffalo, which is coached by ex-Jet boss Rex Ryan.
Slater: “Hey, we won. Hey, we won. Don’t we get to choose [the goal to defend]?” “We chose to kick off just like Coach instructed us to”.
“We wanted to kick the other way, but we weren’t able to make that decision because we won the toss and we chose to kick off”, Slater said.
Later that season when he talked about the decision, Rivera said it freed him as a coach, making him more confident, less afraid. Bill Parcells, in his first season with the Jets, had erased the memory of the Rich Kotite era, but could not erase his quarterback. A win or a tie, and they earn the final Wild Card spot. His name? Todd Bowles.
“It’s bittersweet”, Richardson said. Now they have to travel to Miami, where they have historically played poorly, and win to secure the top seed in the AFC.
I have to go back to an event that wasn’t a play from scrimmage.
With each week of exposure, and each name that appears or reappears on the injury report, the impact of the Patriots’ missing pieces becomes increasingly obvious. Brandon Marshall grabbed a 2-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Fitzpatrick to make it 10-3 with one minute and 57 seconds left in the half. It would be very Jets-like to play up to the talent of New England, and then lose to a struggling Bills team.
“We fought”, Brady said. “We missed that one at the end of regulation, and he knew he was just going to have to make a play and he did”. Ryan Fitzpatrick and the passing game are unsafe, if they can find a way for him to calm down a little on the deep throws. You choose to receive, every time.
He reiterated that field position, and the hope of a defensive stop, were the main factors in his controversial decision.
Marshall registered an NFL-record sixth 100-reception season Sunday with eight catches.
