Samsung 2016 Smart TV Line-Up to Be Employed on IoT Hub Technology
Samsung acquired SmartThings in 2014 for around $200 million.
While the entire 2016 Samsung Smart TV range will enable you to control IoT devices, the SUHD TVs in particular will be able to act as hubs or controllers for the entire smart home.
Samsung’s smart TV operating system was created to be Internet of Things (IoT) ready for easy connectivity and interoperability with other online services and systems.
The connected home is about to get even more connected: Samsung is turning your TV set into a smart home controller.
To be specific, the SUHD models of Samsung’s Smart TVs for next year can themselves be the nexus of all other smart devices in your home.
To connect with all things SmartThings, the company recommends adding the SmartThings Extend USB adapter.
Samsung will become “the first company to launch IoT-ready TVs”, said Hyun Suk Kim, President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. Some of the uses make sense, with Samsung confirming a SmartThings Cinema Mood, that can change the lighting and sound ideal for watching the latest blockbuster movie (on 4K Blu-ray, perhaps?). If the technology is installed in existing devices, it will provide an opportunity to experience the merits of a smart home.
That being said, all of this will depend on whether or not you actually purchase a Samsung smart TV, but if you are considering making the shift from a regular TV to a smart TV then this is a feature that could be worth looking forward to in 2016.
Samsung’s Smart TV improves on the security via connection to an outdoor camera, which allows users to monitor visitors. Motion sensor alerts can also pop-up directly on the TV screen, if movement outside the home is picked up, providing more security and peace of mind, whether at home or away.
The announcement comes a week before the giant CES gadget show in Las Vegas, where all the big electronics manufacturers are expected to show TVs, washing machines and other home appliances that can be networked together.
While all of its SHUD TVs with ship with SmartThings technology inside, the functionality will be “activated regionally as SmartThings expands its platform availability”, the company said.
