Odell Beckham Jr. Issues Apology Following One-Game Suspension
Norman didn’t exactly play a clean game either, but if you had to choose one player to eject it would have been Beckham.
The NFL upheld the suspension after Beckham’s appeal, and the second-year receiver will miss the Giants’ game against Minnesota on Sunday.
If the New York Giants’ playoff hopes are still alive when they take the field Sunday night in Minnesota, they will have to upset the Vikings without their most explosive player. The second-year Pro Bowler is barred from team meetings; attending or watching practices; attending Sunday’s game; or having contact with any club personnel except to arrange off-site medical treatment or rehabilitation. He will be reinstated on Monday.
“I owe some people an apology”.
“I’ll talk to him about it”, said Coughlin, declining to go into details.
“I thought it was contrite, apologetic”, Coughlin said. That is a responsibility I accept and take seriously.
On Wednesday the league announced that it had fined Norman $26,044 for his on field actions.
“Acts that jeopardize the safety of players or expose them to unnecessary risk can not be tolerated”, NFL vice president of football operations Merton Hanks said in his letter to Beckham on Monday.
Beckham was suspended 1 game for his actions.
Beckham Jr. ultimately apologized for his behavior on Sunday: “I want to apologize to Giants fans”.
As for Norman, he said “I don’t know what you’re talking about” when asked about using homophobic slurs towards Beckham. In the passing game, running back Shane Vereen (51 catches) and rookie tight end Will Tye (34) have become frequent Manning targets. Now, there’s a pretty decent chance he plays on Sunday but how effective he’ll be is another question. The helmet hit was the culmination of a game filled with general jackassery from both Beckham and Norman.
Wing and some game officials stepped between the players, and sent the unidentified Panther back to his side of the field.
“They can try to spin it or twist and make it seem like we’re the bad guys here when it was clearly – who was the one that was acting out a little bit?”
Hopefully this outburst will be the lone moment in Beckham’s career (and to a lesser extent, Norman’s) in which his antics get in the way of his play, because he is a joy to watch as a receiver and has had a historic first two seasons.
“I’ll be the reason this will be your last game”, Wing recalled the man saying to Beckham. It’s not fair. It’s not justice. Then we’ve got the Bengals, the deepest team in the league right now, but one that could be looking up at the Steelers in the standings if things don’t go well while Andy Dalton’s on the shelf.
“There were factors involved starting in pregame, which are well documented, which indicate there was an attempt to provoke him”, Coughlin said.
