Heirs to New Hampshire poet sue ‘Big Bang Theory’ producers
Edith Newlin’s daughters, Margaret and Ellen, are asking for monetary compensation and for The Big Bang Theory to stop using the song “Soft Kitty”.

To the surprise of no one, The Big Bang Theory is still putting up huge numbers on CBS, and this seasons main pull was watching what happened between Sheldon and Amy post-break-up and pre-hook-up.
“In 1937, we published a book called Songs for the Nursery School, and we sold tens of thousands of copies”, Willis Music owner Kevin Cranley wrote on the company’s website, according to Deadline. Newlin and her heirs, however, were left out of the deal. The lawsuit, seeking unspecified damages from the sitcom’s producers and distributors, also says the lyrics have been used in the series’ merchandising with shirts, sweatshirts, pajamas and more products featuring the lyrics. As fans surely know, it’s what Sheldon likes to hear when he’s sick, tasking neighbor Penny and his visiting mother to sing it to him to make him feel better.
Newlin’s daughters reportedly want the show to pay up for the pilfered song and cease and desist future use.
“Soft Kitty” has been used in eight episodes of the show since its first appearance in a March 2008 show. The writers wanted the song because one of them remembered it as a child.

Newlin’s daughters are apparently not regular viewers of the show; they reportedly learned of the “Soft Kitty” lullaby in late 2014, while writing an article about their late mother.
