Haley: More armed officers at Guard facilities likely
In the wake of the attacks at two military facilities in Chattanooga, Tennessee, a few citizens are taking protecting military recruiting centers into their own hands.
Leslie Ann Sully, public affairs officer for the Army recruiting battalion that includes South Carolina, said all the normal protective procedures are in place since last Thursday’s attack.
A few GOP leaders have since asked the Democratic governor to arm the National Guard. “Thousands of my constituents in Texas already exercise this right responsibly”, McCaul said in a statement on the bill’s passage. The Marines and sailor were killed at the operations center.
A number of Missouri’s GOP senators and others want Nixon to take similar action.
Pence declared an executive order Saturday that said soldiers and airmen are allowed to carry personal handguns at National Guard armories and recruiting stations.

“If some sort of federal regulation makes it impossible to get them armed immediately, we need to do whatever we can through state law”, said the Chattanooga Republican, who lived in the same neighborhood as Abdulazeez, even though their paths never crossed. The review will determine whether that needs to be expanded. Based on vulnerability assessments, designated officials will be armed at recruitment stations, facilities and installations across the state as necessary.
Any changes following the review will not be released “because it’s counterproductive to security”, she said. In response, a few states were allowing personnel at National Guard facilities, which fall under control of the respective state’s governor, to be armed. Mohammad Youssuf Abdulazeez is accused of shooting a total of seven people before being shot and killed by police. The shootings last week have prompted calls for the Pentagon to lift this rule for federal military offices and installations.
“I’m a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, as are most of my brothers and sisters in the military”, Stimson said.
The other facility targeted in Chattanooga was run by the National Guard. States do have a voice over weapons in its national guard facilities.
But Dayton said the topic is likely to be the subject of discussion later this week when a group of governors, including Dayton, meets in Washington to advise the Guard on a number of issues.
