Almost Time To Recycle Christmas Trees
All decorations, ornaments and lights must be removed from the tree. In 2015, more than 6,965 Christmas trees were collected in Orleans Parish after the holidays and airlifted by the Louisiana National Guard into the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge as part of a program to create new marsh habitat.
“As a coastal city, we must take all restoration seriously”.
“I’d say we’ll pick up between 1,500 to 2,000 trees this time around”, he said.
Condominium or apartment residents must drop off their trees at City Convenience Centers.
As an alternative, the tree may be dropped off at any of the City’s Refuse and Recycling Convenience Centers or at the composting facilities. Trees have to be free of decorations and stands, and must be at least three feet away from garbage carts; they will be picked up by a separate truck.
Those hoping to have their tree picked up are asked to leave it by the curb on their regular trash day.
Flocked trees may not be left in green bins.
Neighborhoods with multiple collections will only receive designated collection on their FIRST recycling day.
In Broward, the tree collection by the county runs through January 18 and only bare trees are accepted. Place the cut portion towards the curb and do not bag trees.
Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age, wear layered clothing including long trousers, long sleeved shirt, and closed-toe, sturdy shoes.
This program helps protect our wetlands and keeps trees out of the landfill.
