Eagles fire coach Chip Kelly with 1 game left in 3rd season

“I have made a decision to release Chip Kelly this evening”, Lurie said in a letter to season ticket holders.

Kelly quickly went about reshaping the roster, trading quarterback Nick Foles to St. Louis, along with a second-round pick, in return for quarterback Sam Bradford.

“I think we’re not consistent, but we need to be consistent, and I don’t think we’ve done a good enough job as coaches to put them in position to make plays”, Kelly said.

The team also announced they have released vice president of player personnel Ed Marynowitz. He also traded running back LeSean McCoy to the Buffalo Bills for linebacker Kiko Alonso in the offseason. Murray has been a bust and Maxwell has underperformed. He led the Eagles to the playoffs in his first year after winning the NFC East division at 10-6.

The only thing more shocking than the Eagles’ firing Kelly is the timing of the move, with one game left in the 2015 season.

Pat Shurmur, the Eagles’ offensive coordinator, will serve as interim head coach in the team’s final game of the season against the New York Giants on Sunday.

Lurie told fans President Don Smolenski and Howie Roseman, the executive vice president of football operations, will assist him in the search for a new coach.
