Pochettino cautious about title talk
SON Heung-min scored a last-minute goal as Tottenham provisionally moved up to third in the English Premier League on Monday with a 2-1 win at Watford.
Ighalo scored his 14th league goal of the season and his 30th of 2015 in the 41st minute to level for Watford after Erik Lamela had fired Spurs into an early lead.
Watford began to take control after the break but their hopes of claiming victory were severely dented midway through the second-half when Nathan Ake was shown a straight red card for a knee-high challenge on Lamela. The GDS replay showed just how close the Hornets had come – the ball was just an inch on the line – but that was enough to deny Watford.
Although Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez have quite rightly taken most of the unexpected plaudits in the Premier League so far this season, Quique Sanchez Flores’ Watford outfit have nonetheless been plugging away nicely with a few of their own surprise stars on board. “We can now say it was an accident against Newcastle – we’re very pleased with the reaction”, Pochettino said.
“I feel sorry for the players because we had the possibility to draw, but I am really proud of my players”. In one minute we can win the match, one minute later, we lose it. The most important is to be realistic with the performance of the team. Not bad for his first Premier League start for Tottenham.
DF Kieran Trippier, 7 – Embraced his role as an attacking full-back, getting forward and putting a number of risky crosses into the box before ultimately setting up the late victor for Son. Spurs started well and took the lead inside the opening 20 minutes following an error from Craig Cathcart.
Asked if he is now enjoying his best form for Spurs since his £30million arrival in the summer of 2013, Lamela said: “I don’t know, I always think about the team”. Tottenham are an outsider for a run at the title and they are most definitely the value bet at the moment in that race just six points off top.
Part of Watford’s success this season has been the ability to keep their best players fit and healthy. “Watford are a very strong team, they usually play 4-4-2 and we’ll see how they play against us”. Although Heung-Min Son does indeed look like he’ll soon blossom into a top acquisition for the White Hart Lane outfit, Spurs could genuinely do with a little more fire power up top. They were actually slow out of the blocks, but once Harry Kane won and converted a penalty for the opener they did not not look back, with the top scorer showing signs of having formed a successful understanding with Dele Alli, who forever catching the eye.
