‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Soars With Record-Breaking $238 Mln Debut
Star Wars: The Force Awakens made $57m (£38m) on Thursday night, beating the previous record of $43.5m held by Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 in 2011.
At the time, mass media and entertainment conglomerate said it would continue producing the Star Wars saga and expand the franchise in the future.
There doesn’t seem to be any limit to what The Force Awakens can achieve, including making a run at Avatar and the all-time domestic box office record of $749.8 million.
Worldwide ticket sales, however, place “Star Wars” behind “Jurassic World”, which made $524.9 million globally in its first weekend.
Dozens of celebrities even showed their love for the Star Wars franchise as Joseph Gordon Levitt posted a photo dressed as Yoda in full costume and green makeup. If they’re going to take home the title for the highest grossing opening weekend of all time, and they nearly certainly are, Jurassic World’s $208 million is the number to beat.
Much has changed since “Star Wars” last appeared at the multiplex.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens already broke some records in the film industry and received positive reviews and strong recommendations from critics and moviegoers.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens has proved the hype was all worth it. The most anticipated movie of the decade is finally here and it has not disappointed. “The Force Awakens” was heading toward a Thursday night-Friday total of more than $120 million domestically, said Dave Hollis, head of distribution for Disney.
And although fans can expect those details to remain guarded until release, LucasFilm’s Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed one important part of the next instalment – the stars of The Force Awakens will all be returning.
Speaking of his approach to The Force Awakens, he: “The fundamental thing was what do we want people to feel”. The latest “Star Wars” is playing in 4,134 North American theaters, the widest December release ever. While newcomers include Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Lupita Nyong’O.
