Dame Maggie Smith may have played the Dowager Countess in Downton Abbey for six series – but she has yet to find time to actually watch it.
He added, “We simply might have gone for a seventh season, but when I’d have stated “We have not acquired Maggie” it might have been a shadow of itself”.
British period drama “Downton Abbey” drew 6.9 million viewers when it aired on ITV channel over the weekend, garnering the biggest Christmas audience in Britain.
Meanwhile, other stars of “Downton Abbey” are now confronted with the reality that their long-running drama is finally over, and they won’t have to film in Highclere Castle anymore. While the show is only loosely based on the novel, its screenwriter Julian Fellowes told WTOP in an interview that he read the book before writing the series.
Smith confessed that her contract with ITV meant that she can’t give away spoilers for “Downton Abbey”.
The most recent picture was of the home’s main cook, Mrs. Patmore (played by Lesley Nicol), helping to prepare a table full of delicious food with someone who looks like they’re from the show’s crew (judging by the modern clothing). The sixth and final season begins Sunday (Jan. 3) on PBS’ “Masterpiece” (8 p.m. CST).
It was a great showcase for the castle and for Alnwick as a whole and should have Northumberland’s tourism bosses grinning as widely as Lady Edith, who had the happy ending she desired in the Downton grand finale. “I never knew such reforming zeal”.
“Downtown Abbey” has been considered one of the most-watched series in Europe to date.
