Fournette leads LSU against Texas Tech in Texas Bowl
Before LSU hit the rodeo arena, the Tigers spent two hours prepping for Tuesday night’s game against Texas Tech with what was a typical Wednesday-like practice session at Texans Practice Facility.
Texas Tech kept up with LSU through the first half of the Texas Bowl until the Tigers literally ran away with the win, 56-27.
LSU took a 21-6 lead with 6:41 to go in the second quarter on a short pass from Harris to Fournette, who took it the rest of the way for a 44-yard touchdown reception, easily running by Red Raider defenders. Tech got the game within a point in the 3 quarter, so LSU responded with three consecutive touchdowns, two of them by Leonard Fournette. Texas Tech answered with a nine-play, 90 yard scoring drive capped by a 46-yard TD pass from Mahomes to Jakeem Grant, who beat Tre’Davious White on a deep pattern.
He finished with 212 yards on 29 carries, also scoring on runs of 43 and four yards in the third quarter and another two-yard score in the fourth.
While LSU enters Tuesday’s contest as a significant favorite, it is impossible to count out a Texas Tech team with so much firepower on offense.
Kingsbury saw enough glimmer from his offense to be optimistic about next season, particularly with Mahomes back for his junior year. The Red Raiders usually couldn’t wait for him to get downfield, though, as LSU sacked Mahomes six times.
Fournette was stopped for no gain on one carry on LSU’s next drive and managed just 2 yards on the next one.
Cam Cameron spent a good portion of the game forgetting that he has the best player in college football on his team.* At the half, LSU had almost a perfectly even split between runs and passes, which is a complete divergence from the team’s splits all year long.
Texas Tech put all of its effort into preventing Fournette from breaking off big plays during the beginning of the game.
LSU showed the Red Raiders they still have a ways to go.
Coach Miles was asked about his Tigers’ offensive game plan and how his staff has corrected their errors from the regular season.
Mahomes finished the game 25/48 passing for 346 yards and four touchdowns with one interception.
LSU tailback Leonard Fournette may have been just a bit offended after being snubbed from the Heisman Trophy ceremony.
Seventeen seconds after allowing a Texas Tech score, LSU extended its lead to 14-6.
“Tech has a really fine quarterback, but few folks realize how well this team runs”, LSU coach Les Miles told the media. He ran Fournette at them until they folded.
“We got better, ” Kingsbury said. He’s seventh in the nation with 4,283 yards passing and has thrown for 32 touchdowns.
