LCU professor says Texas Bowl is a win-win situation for him
Earlier in the season, the Red Raiders played one of the nation’s most hard three-game stretches that included a win at previously ranked Arkansas and back-to-back losses to consecutive top-5 ranked teams in No. 3 TCU (55-52 loss at home) and No. 5 Baylor (63-35 loss at AT&T Stadium in Arlington).
Fournette had a 2-yard touchdown run and 44-yard touchdown receiving in the first half, sandwiched around D.J. Chark’s 79-yard scoring run on a reverse, for a 21-13 Tigers’ advantage at the break.
Texas Tech look to extend its bowl winning streak to five games and get its first win over LSU when the Red Raiders and Tigers meet in the Texas Bowl in Houston.
According to oddsmakers at RealBets, LSU is favored in this bowl game, as the Tigers are getting odds of -7 points against Texas Tech.
The Tigers’ game plan was simple: get the ball to All-American running back Leonard Fournette, again and again and again.
605 Points have been scored in the first half of Texas Tech’s games this season. The Red Raiders need to make some kind of momentum-changing play in the game.
Brandon Harris did it with his legs and his arm, passing for 254 yards and a touchdown while adding a 26-yard scoring run. Will he have another big game today in the Texas Bowl when the Tigers face Texas Tech?
NOTES: RB Leonard Fournette, who broke the LSU record for rushing touchdowns in a season with 21, is not eligible for this year’s NFL Draft. If Washington does find success on the ground, LSU will be forced to help against the run with its safeties leaving the Texas Tech receivers in one-on-one situations, which would favor the Red Raiders.
LSU won its first seven games of the season before losing three in a row, leading to questions about the head coaching job security of Les Miles. Grant ranks third nationally with 2,167 all-purpose yards – 1,143 on receptions, 956 on kickoff returns and 68 on rushing attempts.
Fournette’s fifth touchdown of the game came at the end of a 65-yard drive by the Tigers.
Fournette rushed for a Texas Bowl record 212 yards on 29 carries.
The Tigers then reeled off 14 more points to put the game out of reach. By the end of the third quarter, Fournette had set a Texas Bowl record for points scored by an individual and finished the day with 30 points scored for the Tigers. LSU’s following possession led to a touchdown. Texas Tech’s offense can’t be stopped, but it can be slowed if there’s pressure on the QB. He found open receivers numerous times after scrambling away from LSU pressure and connected with wide receiver Jakeem Grant for three touchdowns.
It was the 10th 100-yard rushing game and fourth of 200 this season for Fournette, who extended his LSU single-season rushing record to 1,953 yards.
“He’s a phenomenal athlete, one of those once-in-a-generation-type backs”, Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury said.
“It was important that we pick up speed and get back at it”, Miles said.
Cam Cameron spent a good portion of the game forgetting that he has the best player in college football on his team.* At the half, LSU had almost a perfectly even split between runs and passes, which is a complete divergence from the team’s splits all year long.
