Eagles send Chip Kelly packing with one game left
Kelly was sacked Tuesday night by the Philadelphia Eagles, with one game to go in his third season. In the meantime, I expect his coaching staff and team to respond favorably to this news in preparation for Houston on Sunday and then begin thinking about what more they can provide next season.
Kelly was given control of personnel moves last January and overhauled the roster in a series of questionable moves. Kelly won an NFC East crown in his first season and won 10 games and just missed the playoffs in his second season.
“I spent the last three seasons evaluating the many factors involved in our performance as a team”, Lurie said in the letter.to fans “As I watched this season unfold, I determined that it was time to make a change”.
Lurie, 64, denied reports that his conversation with frustrated running back DeMarco Murray aided the decision to release Kelly, but did acknowledged that he actively spoke with the players. Longtime NFL executive Tom Donahoe will assume the role of senior director of player personnel.
Less than three years ago, I appeared on FOX 29 to discuss Philly2Philly’s new book, A Snowball’s Chance, as well as give my thoughts on the Eagles hiring of new coach Chip Kelly. The bold move was made just days before the season finale, which is unprecedented for Lurie.
As for who Lurie will hire as the Eagles next head coach, Bissinger has one suggestion.
Mike Holmgren, one of a handful of coaches to take two franchises to the Super Bowl, once explained the difference in how a coach can control his team.
“I spoke to Gus Bradley today to confirm to him that he will continue as head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2016”.
So those personnel decisions, combined with Kelly’s unorthodox coaching style, offensive scheme and personality that could be perceived as being arrogant and aloof, ultimately became his downfall. His style was to make his opposition exhausted and win games late on conditioning and while it had some success, he went through too many athletes, making even his star players look over their shoulders at all times.
Despite the negative aspects, there is also plenty to like about Kelly as a candidate.
In the end, it doesn’t appear that Kelly’s failures as a general manager were necessarily what led to his dismissal.
In his high school years, Chip played quarterback, but switched to defensive back to play for the University of New Hampshire.
Chip Kelly, on the other hand, could be gotten for nothing but whatever deal is made with him.
“He’s very disappointed”, Kelly said Monday of Lurie.
Two current Eagles players, speaking on condition of anonymity because the team was not publicly discussing the firing, told the AP that several players had met in groups in recent weeks to discuss their frustration with Kelly. I’ve seen the numbers and you can use them in many ways – for example, when the 0-3 Steelers lost to the 0-3 Vikings in London in 2012, that to me is not what we’re talking about.
