Chip Kelly fired by Philadelphia Eagles
In his first two seasons, Kelly went 10-6 in both of them and landed in the playoffs in 2013.
The team also announced they have released vice president of player personnel Ed Marynowitz.
The team was with former coach Andy Reid for fourteen years; Kelly has only had 3 years with the team, but made some pretty major decisions that have led to poor playing and little team building. In 2014 they finished 10-6 but missed the playoffs. Of course, the success of the team will take time (still) and the job is a hard one but Chip Kelly is a victor at heart and he wants nothing more than to build a team his way and win a Super Bowl.
So those personnel decisions, combined with Kelly’s unorthodox coaching style, offensive scheme and personality that could be perceived as being arrogant and aloof, ultimately became his downfall.
The release stated that Lurie “released” Kelly, 26-21 (.553) in three seasons with the team, including 0-1 in the playoffs. But the last three seasons and especially 2015 are a lesson to him and to owners/NFL bosses out there regarding college coaches and in general putting too much in one basket without really knowing what you have. But he stressed that some of that player dissent _ most notably from running back DeMarco Murray, who met with Lurie on a team flight home from New England earlier in the month _ wasn’t the deciding factor.
Pat Shurmur will be interim head coach for Sunday’s season finale against the Giants in NY where the Eagles will bid to snap a two-game losing streak.
Lurie refuted reports that said he gave Kelly a chance to return, but only if he gave up his personnel role and focused on just coaching.
Again, nothing is definite, but, like Chip, Roseman should not have any business being the GM of the Eagles, or any team for that matter.
The executive vice president of football operations, will assist him in the search for a new coach. Less than 48 hours after quarterback Sam Bradford said he wanted to be back with the Eagles, Kelly…
Chip Kelly took over a team that went 4-12 in 2012 before he got there.
Kelly has been criticized for his personnel moves in Philly. The coach wants to stay in the National Football League, so one name that’s likely to come up is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He had waited until the end of the season during the previous three firings. It gives me goosebumps to think about. Lurie clearly won’t be giving his new coach total control any time soon.
As i mentioned in my previous article, hiring Chip Kelly would be a good move for the Titans on several levels.
Should the Cardinals and Panthers finish at 14-2, the tiebreaker would go to the Cardinals because they’d have a better record against conference opponents.
