Jeffrey Lurie Has Decimated The Eagles
Pat Shurmur was named the Philadelphia Eagles interim head coach and he will coach his team’s final game of the season against the New York Giants.
While the Eagles’ 2015 season was a major disappointment, at 6-9 and out of the playoffs heading into Week 17, it’s hard to believe that Kelly was sacked – because that really is what the word “released” means – strictly because of his team’s on-field performance.
Chip Kelly wanted to take a shot on taking the Philadelphia Eagles from “good to great”, in Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie’s words.
There was a report from NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport that Eagles running back DeMarco Murray spoke directly to Lurie about how he had no confidence in Kelly as the team’s head coach. Eagles fans are, as ever, still waiting for that first Super Bowl victory. Tom Donahoe has been named senior director of player personnel. “Number one, a smart, strategic thinker, thatâs a given”. I came across a lot of people who told me that, “I shouldn’t criticize Chip because he knows a lot more about football than I do”.
“It’s kind of like Nick Saban when he went to the pros and he tried to do the same stuff he does to college kids to professional athletes”, Johnson said.
The fired Philadelphia Eagles head coach is reportedly trying to stay in the National Football League, and the Tennessee Titans could be an ideal location.
“I’d hate to ever be risk averse, I don’t ever want to operate that way”, Lurie said. “I had a players- only meeting with them this morning, there’s gonna be more this afternoon with certain players”.
Granted, the Dolphins have a talented quarterback under contract for the next few seasons in Ryan Tannehill, while the Eagles do not.
Hasselbeck said he knows Kelly “fairly well”, the result of both men coming from New England and Kelly recruiting Matt Hasselbeck’s younger brother, Tim, when Kelly was coaching at the University of New Hampshire.
Lurie said he has been talking with the players about their future coach. Lurie said for the first time that Kelly demanded full control so he gave it to him so he would be “accountable for his decisions”.
Kelly points to Pete Carroll as someone who is doing well in the NFL.
Under Kelly’s direction, the Eagles traded LeSean McCoy, who was the franchise’s all-time leading rusher, for linebacker Kiko Alonso, who played at OR for Kelly.
“I think the best approach is a real collaborative approach”, he said.
Kelly’s tenure as Eagles coach lasted 1,077 days, and Lurie didn’t let it last five more.
