‘Star Wars,’ ‘Jurassic World’ bring record box office
Box Office Mojo reports that “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is also one of the highest-grossing movies of all time in the U.S. It is now at the fifth spot with $571 million (AU$783 million).
“This total overtook the previous record of $10.9 billion set in 2013”. What’s more, as this will only be the movie’s third weekend, it likely still has plenty of business left to do.
Ip Man’s punch proved stronger than the Force at the local box office over the Christmas long weekend, as Ip Man 3 kicked Star Wars: The Force Awakens off the top of the chart.
The space saga took in $31.4 million on Monday in USA theaters and another $39.4 million in global showings.
“The Force Awakens” hit theaters, it was pretty clear it would be one of the biggest film debuts of all time. It’s topped The Phantom Menace’s haul of $1.027 billion, but has yet to beat what A New Hope made when inflation is taken into account. “The Force Awakens could be closing on that by the end of New Year’s weekend”.
Universal Pictures Movie-goers couldn’t get enough of Chris Pratt in ‘Jurassic World, ‘ either. It scored the biggest worldwide debut with US$529 million.
And all these records were all achieved without China, the world’s second-largest film market. The location’s latest star turn in The Force Awakens has led the local tourism board to create a Film and TV Trail so visitors can easily find all of the key filming locations in the Gloucestershire park.
Other big contributors were “Furious 7” with $353 million, Clint Eastwood’s “American Sniper” with $350 million, and “Fifty Shades of Grey” with $166.2 million.
For the Friday-Saturday-Sunday period, it earned an estimated $153.5 million, box office monitor Exhibitor Relations said. The film, which is directed by Roland Emmerich and produced by Twentieth Century Fox, has a $200 million budget, according to IMDB. Sisters is at $40 million after 11 days. The billion mark was crossed recently and the film has only been out for 13 days, so there are millions still coming.
The quirky tale of a mom whose marketing mojo makes her a millionaire, has earned solid reviews for the Oscar-winning co-stars. It’s possible, but the flick will have to do battle with Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight” which I promise is a thrill-a-minute.
