LSU outguns Tech 56-27 in Texas Bowl
All of which likely means that LSU and Leonard Fournette will start 2016 as one of the favorites in the SEC West and for the Heisman Trophy, respectively. Lsu Tigers rank at 1 for 48.9 road passing yards where as Texas Tech Red Raiders rank at 44 for allowing 24.0 passing yards at home. It would be tough for Fournette to top what he did this season statistically, but a 2000 yard season next year would be a start.
“I think it’s the right turn”, Miles said.
Harris was picked off Texas Tech linebacker Dakota Allen and cashed in three plays and 19 seconds later on a touchdown pass from Mahomes to Reginald Davis cut the lead to 21-20 in the third quarter.
“Defensively, we still have a ways to go, ” Kingsbury said. “To finish this non-conference schedule at 10-1 really validated that our guys are improving at a lot of areas”. The 46-yard pass setup a 4-yard touchdown run by Fournette, his fourth score of the night.
“That was a little different level of speed we were used to”, Kingsbury said of LSU’s defense. “It took us awhile to adjust”.
Even after Fournette’s long touchdown run extended the LSU lead, Texas Tech stayed close to the Tigers, with quarterback Pat Mahomes scrambling away from LSU pass rushers and completing passes all over the field.
The Tigers (9-3) were also much faster and outgained an offense No. 2 in the nation in total yards a game average at 594 by 638 yards to 399.
Fournette’s second rushing touchdown, seven minutes into the second half with LSU’s lead reduced to a single point, was one of his easiest of the season.
The Tigers opened the game by opening up its offense.
Texas Tech defensive coordinator David Gibbs admitted before the game that his team was “overmatched defensively” and he was right on cue as any chance that Tech and the nation’s third-worst rushing defense had at stopping LSU’s ground game went out of the window the first time the Tigers had the ball. Sophomore wide receiver D.J. Chark of Alexandria did not catch a pass, but he scored on a 79-yard end around on the first touch of his career and had a 7-yard gain. With 8:16 to play, LSU led 49-27.
It looked for a while like the Texas Tech Red Raiders might give the LSU Tigers a good game during the Texas Bowl on Tuesday night.
On LSU’s second drive of the game, Harris’ third-and-10 pass was intercepted in front of tight end Colin Jeter at the LSU 31.
He added a reception for 44 yards and accounted for five – count’em – 5 LSU touchdowns.
In the first two quarters, Leonard Fournette led the Tigers’ rushing game with 81 rushing yards on 14 attempts, including a 2-yard touchdown run to first put LSU on the board. Mahomes, who finished 14 of 26 for 173 yards with two touchdowns in the first half, found Grant from three yards out for the touchdown. Texas Tech wound up with 29 rushing yards.
Like Fournette, Tiger sophomore quarterback Brandon Harris contributes to the chaos and head scratching.
Cameron also made a concerted effort to get quarterback Brandon Harris rolling.
