Officers in Tamir Rice Case to Face Administrative Review, Mayor Says
Cuyahoga (ky-uh-HOH’-guh) County prosecutor Tim McGinty says his office was required ethically to tell the grand jury they didn’t think a conviction was likely. He blamed the shooting on a “perfect storm” of human error and miscommunication.
Mr McGinty urged those who disagreed with the grand jury decision to protest peacefully. In New York’s Washington Square, in Greenwich Village, protesters gathered to voice their opposition to the decision.
Case Western Reserve University law professor Lewis Katz said the city would be vulnerable at trial because of the failure of the 911 call taker to pass on key information – namely, that the caller said the gunman was probably a juvenile and the gun probably wasn’t real.
The governor described the death of Rice, who was holding a toy gun when killed by police past year, as a “terrible tragedy”.
“Let’s look at the whole transcript to see how he presented this case to the Grand Jury”, Nelson said.
The attorney for Loehmann, Henry Hilow, said critics have created a national dialogue about the shooting that don’t match the facts about what the officers knew. “The evidence did not indicate criminal conduct by police”.
But Tamir, who was shot to death by a white police officer that day, where the police have historically behaved as an occupying force that shoots first and asks questions later. “In this case, McGinty used the grand jury as more of a sounding board for an exoneration of the potential defendants, rather than as a review of possible charges against them”, Melber wrote.
Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams said on Tuesday an administrative committee, which includes civilians, will start the review from scratch, beginning with the initial calls to police.
Can you tell which of these guns is real and which is a replica?
Police killings, especially of African Americans, have sparked protests in cities across the U.S. over the past two years.
Around 60 to 80 protesters walked from the Justice Center to the city’s Shoreway as law enforcement squad cars, mounted police and members of the media followed them.
Jones said the loose coalition could support either a Democratic or Republican alternative to McGinty. Those were released in October. Tamir’s family in a statement said that it was saddened and disappointed by this outcome.
Surveillance video showed Rice was fatally shot within seconds of the patrol auto arriving on the scene as he began to pull the toy gun out of his waistband.
Activists pressuring northeast Ohio’s most famous resident to ride the pine until until the Department of Justice “imprisons the murderers of Tamir Rice” will have to find another superstar to join their cause.
As an instrument of the prosecution, the grand jury process shielded Rice’s killers from justice.
