‘Extraordinary’ Security Planned for Times Square on New Year’s Eve
With over a million people expected in Midtown Manhattan and a billion more watching on TV, New York officials are determined to make Times Square the safest place on earth on New Year’s Eve.
How about if that Olive Garden had a prime view of the New Year’s Eve ball drop in Times Square?
Mayor Bill de Blasio said New York City is the best prepared city to prevent terrorism as 6,000 officers will patrol Times Square on New Year’s Eve.
After a series of recent terrorist attacks in 2015 sparked global panic, New York City is vamping up it’s counterterrorism measures ahead of one of the highest-profile days of the year – New Year’s Eve.
Heavily armed counterterrorism teams and bomb-sniffing dogs will also be patrolling the crowded zones and the buildings that surround them as well as the 42nd street subway station. “There will be a tremendous number of officers that you will see, there will be many officers you won’t see”.
That year, the owner of One Times Square, Alex Parker, was so frustrated with the conditions in the area that he threatened to turn off the lights and cancel the ball drop.
Authorities hit back that there was no credible threat against the city or anywhere else in the United States, and have sought to reassure a jittery public. Musical performers to attend are Carrie Underwood, Demi Lvoato, Wiz Khalifa, Luke Bryan, and Charlie Puth.
Hundreds of thousands of people turning up for the ball drop isn’t a new phenomenon.
After the show, sanitation crews will get to work cleaning up from the celebration, working through the night to dispose of an estimated 50 tons of garbage, including confetti, party hats and other leftovers from the revelry. Still, we all want the feeling of being in the center of things when the big event goes down.
