US beats Switzerland 10-1 in world juniors
Projected 2016 NHL Draft No. 1 pick Auston Matthews leads the Americans with eight points (four goals).
Goals by defensemen Brandon Carlo and Zach Werenski would double the lead in the first.
Goal scorer Colin White of the U.S, center, and teammate Matthew Tkachuk celebrate in front of Denmark’s Thomas Olsen during the 2016 IIHF World Junior U20 Ice Hockey Championships tournament match between Denmark and US in Helsinki, Finland, Thursday, Dec. 31, 2015. And after shaking off a heavy hit from Switzerland’s Timo Meier, Auston Matthews fed Matthew Tkachuk at 15:10 to put the USA ahead 5-0 and end the night for Swiss goaltender, Joren van Pottelberghe, who allowed five goals on 10 shots and showed signs of fatigue after backstopping the Swiss for much of yesterday’s meeting with Canada.
Netminder Alex Nedeljkovic turned away all but one shot in a 27-save performance for the Americans, shutting the door while Team USA posted six goals in just the first 20 minutes alone. “So I suggest to our team we have to win the game”. Matthew Tkachuck had two goals and an assist, while Christian Dvoark, a Palos, Ill. native, had an goal and assist. Tkachuck and Matthews add their second goals before White and Donato rounded out the scoring in the second period.
The U.S. played without top-line right wing Alexander DeBrincat, who is day-to-day because of an upper-body injury.
The win improves the United States to 2-0-0-1 and six points.
Sonny Milano, Colin White, and Anders Bjork, on the power play, also scored for the US, which finished second in Group A at 3-1-0.
“Everybody contributed so that was nice to see”, Matthews told NHL Network.
