Obama to Act Next Week on Gun Background Checks
White House spokesman Eric Schultz called the actions a necessary move because the Republican-controlled Congress has snubbed previous efforts of the administration to tighten gun laws.
“My biggest frustration so far is the fact that this society has not been willing to take some basic steps to keep guns out of the hands of people who can do just unbelievable damage”, Obama said a year ago.
“That is why he has asked his team to scrub existing legal authorities to see if there’s any additional action we can take administratively”, Schultz said Thursday.
Final touches are being put on the executive actions by the White House, which has been trying to slow the number of gun violence incidents across the country after the deadly incidents in Charleston, Colorado Springs, San Bernardino, California, Roseburg, Oregon, and others.
Obama has long advocated for more gun control laws, to little avail.
United States President Barack Obama is expected to introduce stricter gun control regulations early next year in the wake of mass shootings across America in 2015.
“This is not something I can do by myself”, Obama said after the community college shooting in October. The proposal to require licenses for more small-scale gun sellers may not close the infamous “gun show loophole”, which enables people to purchase guns without a background check at gun shows and online as well, Politico reported. Currently, all reporting of those crimes is voluntary.
A spokeswoman for the National Rifle Association said the group had no comment The group previously told CNN that Obama’s “gun control agenda was rejected by Congress. Now, he is doing what he always does when he doesn’t get his way, defying the will of the people and using executive action”. The new policy was outlined by Vice President Joe Biden, who explained that one measure closed a loophole allowing individuals banned from gun ownership, such as felons convicted of domestic violence, from buying guns through trusts or corporations.
Clinton’s suggested she’d wield even more power if elected to the White House than Obama when it comes to firearms sales.
She also favors a proposal to ban Americans on the no-fly list from purchasing firearms, also backed by the president.
