Trevone Boykin Suspended For Alamo Bowl Following Arrest On Felony Assault Charge
TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin was arrested after allegedly injuring a police officer during a brawl outside of a bar in San Antonio early on Thursday.
According to multiple reports, the incident took place at Pat O’Brien’s Bar around 2 a.m. when Boykin and a group of teammates got into a scuffle with a set of hecklers.
Police said Boykin hit an employee as the fight moved out of the bar. After leaving the bar, the fight continued out on the street as bouncers and San Antonio bicycle police attempted to break it up.
The arrest cost Boykin his job as quarterback in his last college game head coach Gary Patterson said. Boykin wasn’t 100-percent healthy down the stretch in 2015 for the Horned Frogs and could have used a positive performance in the bowl game. Bond was listed as $5,000. “We are disappointed in their actions and apologize to the TCU Horned Frogs Nation, Valero Alamo Bowl and city of San Antonio”, he said. After walking away, the suspect – bystanders told police it was Boykin – charged officers. Members of the group he was with told officers they would get him back to the hotel they were staying at.
San Antonio Police spokesman Sgt. Jesse Salame said Boykin was being held on $5,000 bond. Several officers then wrestled him to the ground. After officers threatened to use a stun gun on Boykin, he was arrested.
The star quarterback known for a compassionate picture kneeling to talk to a girl in a wheelchair on the playing field is now in front of news cameras entering and leaving a San Antonio jail. The officer who was struck by Boykin was treated by medical personnel for facial lacerations and bruises.
“Clearly this was not an appropriate way to act”, said San Antonio Police Chief William McMannus.
Boykin is charged with assault of a public servant causing bodily injury, resisting arrest and public intoxication. “He was heckled and he responded to it”.
Boykin was scheduled to meet with reporters Thursday afternoon as part of the Alamo Bowl media schedule. Running back Aaron Green, one of Boykin’s closest friends, called the incident “extremely heartbreaking”.
As of Wednesday, NFLDraftScout.com had projected Boykin as a seventh-round pick/undrafted free agent, and ranked him as the class’ No. 14 quarterback.
“I’m hurting for him”. Meacham and his fellow co-coordinator, Sonny Cumbie, said they’re leaning toward starting senior Bram Kohlhausen over redshirt freshman Foster Sawyer against OR but have yet to make a final decision.
Boykin threw for 3,575 yards with 31 touchdowns and ran for 612 yards and 10 more scores this season.
Boykin, a second-team All-Big 12 quarterback, has struggled through a disappointing season after coming into the season as one of the favorites for the Heisman Trophy.
