Driver held in Vegas crash had pot in system
Pic: ReutersAn Oregon woman accused of plowing her auto into a crowd on a Las Vegas Strip sidewalk, killing one person and injuring dozens, had marijuana in her system following the incident, county officials said on Wednesday.
Wolfson had said last week that the evidence against Holloway was “compelling”. She couldn’t explain why she drove onto the sidewalk.
But the amount of “active marijuana” in her blood was over the legal limit for driving in Nevada, Wolfson’s office said.
Coffee said that while the level of metabolite in Holloway’s system was above state limits, it was below a 50 nanograms-per-milliliter limit set by the federal Department of Transportation for pilots, overland truckers and other interstate drivers.
Last week, defense attorney Joseph Abood requested that Holloway’s arraignment be delayed pending further investigation into the incident.
The next court date scheduled for this case is a statuss check at 8 a.m. on January 20, 2016. “Just because she’s charged doesn’t mean she’s guilty”, Abood said after her initial hearing on December 23, according to CNN, adding: “There are all kinds of possibilities that we have to look into to make a determination of what happened here”.
After the accident, police say, Holloway pulled into the valet parking area at the Tuscany Hotel & Casino, and told the valet to call 911 because she had hit several people.
Holloway, who legally changed her name to Paris Paradise Morton in October, had turned her life around after a troubled childhood, according to a 2012 video by the Portland Opportunities Industrialization Center, which helps at-risk youth with education and career training.
Prosecutors say they expect to file additional charges as police continue to interview witnesses, possibly including attempted murder.
