Scientists have been calling the spotting as one of the last mysteries of the ocean owing to two reasons- firstly because of its rare public appearance and also it is part of such a world that is quite hostile to humans. Mizuhashi Fisherina manager Tatsuya Wakasugi said that he was surprised to spot a living squid. The squids are normally found in areas of the ocean subject to great water pressures. The massive invertebrate, four metres (13 feet) in length, was discovered by fishermen on December 24 at a port in the city of Toyama on Japan’s northwestern coast. Most knowledge about the animal has come from carcasses washed up on shore. The squid seen in the footage is estimated to be just over 12 feet long, but giant squid are thought to grow over three times that size.
